I tried to photograph lightening once. i had no tripod, so i was resting the camera on a wall, i tried to click at the moment of the lightening which was (obviously) futile. I tried long exposure too but it just came out a muddy mess.

I took these by just resting my camera on the back wall. I had it on between 4 and 8 seconds shutter speed. I've tried to photo lightning too but as with many things weather wise it just didn't want to play ball.

i got put off photography when i was about 12. i went into a camera shop to get a camera and told the guy what i wanted to do - long shutter speeds to get the swish of the car. and he told me "oh no young fella you want to spend years learning what you can do with 'ordinary' shutter speeds first"

i believed him and didnt bother buying the camera - years later i learned i could do what i want and pick up the technicalities as i go along. His method is probably good for some but didnt suit my way of learning. - two things i did learn - dont let anyone tell you you cant do something, and dont tell a kid he cant do something

(it wasnt the only time i learnt the lesson though - i had to learn it again before it got into my thick head)

In Texas, you need all the anti-firework laws you can get.

Bonfire night?  I thought it was Guy Fawkes Day or something?  Isnt this thing all about hating Papists or something? Dont worry, I know its not personal.
